"Keeping our roads safe ... The War on Pothole

Potholes cost the US billions of dollars to repair.  Add to that the huge cost to repair damage to vehicles and sadly, loss of life due to pothole related accidents.

There are millions of miles of asphalt roads to maintain on City Streets and country Highways. Municipalities budgets are strained with this ever increasing problem.

The high private and commercial traffic on US roads and the extreme weather changes, are the major cause of potholes. Especially in the

North during the winter months, when salt and snow take it's toll.

Potholes are not only costly to repair but also cause hundreds of millions of dollars damage to vehicles. Not only to tires but also to steering and suspension not to mention one's nerves.Rough roads cost drivers an estimated $335 a year in repairs.  Watch this short video which explains the problem graphically.

According to this  report,  New York City has 40 crews working 24/7 trying to combat the pothole problem.  In just a few weeks over 46,000 potholes were repaired.   The city of Philadelphia had to deal with 4800 potholes due to the extreme weather recently and DC fixed 6500 potholes this year.  Almost 1/3rd of US Roads are in poor condition.    This is a huge problem.

The conventional method to quickly fix a pot hole is to use "throw n go" This is a quick fix method and invariably the pothole will re-open after a month or so, necessitating another visit by the repair team.

A more permanent fix would be to use conventional asphalt, but that requires a team of trained workers with the right equipment ie:heating and compacting equipment. This method produces a better fix but is also costly as it involves many man hours and diesel and other operating expenses.

OUR SOLUTION :

4Seasons™ pourable pothole filler, a liquid, rubberized, pourable filler used to fill cracks, potholes, and irregularities in asphalt & concrete pavement. This product requires no heating, no special equipment and anyone with two hands can do the work. It comes in 5 gallon buckets but is also available in bulk.

The bucket contains Part A - Liquid asphalt and Part B - Aggregate with catalyst.  The method is quite simple.   Remove both parts from the bucket.  Shake Part A a few times to mix any settlement.    Pour the liquid into the bucket.   Now, open the bag of aggregate and if the temperature is below 50 degrees F, add the small bag of activator to the aggregate and shake the bag to evenly spread the activator.

Pour the aggregate into the liquid in the bucket and stir with a sturdy mixing stick.  After a few seconds you will notice the mixture becoming more liquid.  Continue stirring for approximately 40 seconds or until the product is liquified.  From this point, you have about 3 minutes to pour into the pothole.   The product is self leveling but it  is advisable to make sure the product adheres to the edge of the pothole for better bonding.   It only takes 40 to 60 minutes to set hard enough to open to traffic.

Sewer Grates - A Tire's Big Enemy

A big hazzard to vehicle tires, shocks, steering and other drive train components are Sewer Grates.

Usually asphalt around the edges of the grate begin to deteriorate over time due to vibration from traffic and from expansion and retraction during hot and cold weather and rain.

This break up process is accelerated in the winter months when water in the crack freezes and expands and the pressure enlarges the gap into a crack etc.

Even a small hole will eventually become a big hole

and expose the steel edge of the grate to traffic.   Filling the hole with asphalt is a temporary fix, but within a short time the process will start over again probably even quicker than originally.
The reason is that the new material does not bond well with the older material and within a short time water enters the minute gap between the two materials and with the force of tires passing over, the water becomes a jet of water, thus opening the gap further.

There are many fixes, but of course we recommend 4Seasons™ Pourable Pothole Filler, which is a  liquid, rubberized, pourable filler used to fill cracks, potholes, and irregularities in asphalt & concrete pavement.

The photo on above, shows the grate after application of 4Seasons™   and a photo on the right, taken five years later shows the repair still as good as new.

Filling Cracks in Cement and Asphalt - Easy as 1,2,3

Your road or driveway was pristine the day it was completed.  Fast forward two, three or four years later, the sun, rain and constant use, have caused nasty looking cracks to appear.

Cracks eventually become potholes which are more expensive to repair.   Especially where there is heavier traffic on roads, the constant change in pressure from the tires of heavy, high speed vehicles, causes the area around the cracks to flex and weaken, eventually becoming a pothole.

The solution, re-surface.   But with budget being the main consideration, invariably the cracks remain and eventually turn into a much bigger problem.     There are many methods being applied to combat the crack problem.

                 4Seasons™ to the rescue.

Our Crack Filler is actually 4Seasons™ pothole filler, but with less Part B aggregate, which makes it much more pourable.      The process is as easy as 1, 2 , 3.   Open the bucket and remove the contents.

1 - Shake Part A liquid and pour into bucket.
2 - Pour in the Part B aggregate and stir for approximately 40 seconds or until the product is liquified.
3 - Pour 4Seasons™ Crack Filler into cracks and allow 60 to 90 minutes to set.
That's as simple as it gets.  No need for special equipment or skills.  Just some arm muscle motion and about 3 to 4 minutes to do the repair job.

One of the great successes of  4Seasons™ pothole and crack filler, is it's flexibility.   The product hardens but remains pliable.  So even after a lot of use, the product remains bonded to the surrounding material for as long as that material remains intact.

For repairs to cement cracks, we recommend using our Primer first.  Clean the cracks from loose dirt and water, then apply the Primer with a throw away paint brush.  Allow to set and bond with the surrounding concrete for about 30 minutes, then follow the steps described above  1,2 and 3
